Recognising Malaysian Authors by Yasmin Zetti Martin

MALAYSIAN readers have finally had their say heard loud and clear when, on Tuesday 27 May 2008, POPULAR, The Star, and Berita Harian presented four local authors with trophies and RM1000 in cash at the inaugural Readers’ Choice Awards presentation ceremony.

For the past four weeks, The Star and Berita Harian have asked their readers to fill out forms to vote for their most favourite local book titles published in 2007, in fiction and non-fiction categories. The search for Malaysia’s most popular book titles coincides with Malaysia’s largest international book exhibition -- BookFest @ Malaysia 2008, which runs at the KL Convention Centre till Sunday 01 June.

The Executive Director of POPULAR Book Company (M) Sdn Bhd explained that the Awards were held in conjunction with the BookFest because the festival provides a perfect platform with which to draw attention to the winning authors’ other published works, as well as those of other nominated books.

“The 3 organisers are spearheading efforts in promoting the local book publishing industry, while at the same time, galvanising the reading public to help us in our cause by voting for their favourite local books,” she said at the post-awards ceremony press conference.

“We sincerely hope that these awards will be an impetus for our local authors to continue producing good works which will benefit them, the book publishers, book retailers as well as the readers. It is truly a win-win situation for all of us,” she stressed.

The Readers’ Choice Awards for most popular English books went to:-

  • This End of the Rainbow by Adibah Amin for the fiction category
  • Honk! If You’re Malaysian by Lydia Teh for the non-fiction category

The Readers’ Choice Awards for most popular Malay books went to:-

  • Bayangan Rindu by Anis Ayuni for the fiction category
  • Kuasa Hijrah Kuasa Untuk Berubah by Dato’ Dr Haji Mohd Fadzilah Kamsah & Fadzli Yusof for the non-fiction category

Each of the above winners took home RM1000 and a trophy!

One last comment, and food for thought, Who is a Malaysian author?
Is it someone born and bred in Malaysia?
Is it someone who resides currently in Malaysia?
Is it someone with Malaysian citizenship?
Is it someone who once lived in Malaysia?

Thanks for the note, Amir! The mistake has been rectified -- "Dato' Dr Harun Din Menjawab Persoalan" is by Dato' Dr Harun Din, with Ishak Din & Abu Hassan Din.

Let us hope that this and other awards galvanise publishers to produce more locally grown writing, especially the short story format which is currently having a renaissance in the UK and is still as popular as it ever was in North America.

Erm, much as I would love to take credit, I really had nothing to do with the Harun Din book. Really.
