| Synopsis : | Contemporary Art in Schools (CAIS), is an art education outreach project, which, as the title suggests, brings contemporary art out from galleries and into the classroom. Sekolah Menengah Stella Maris, a private mission in Kuala Lumpur, will be the first school to host this programme, and the art displayed will merge with the school environment for the students to “co-exist” with the artworks. The project involves the following parts: 1. A series of hands-on art workshops for students of Sek Men Stella Maris from 13 Jul - 10 Aug 2008, led by Malaysian artists Chuah Chong Yong, Au Sow Yee, Singapore artist Amanda Heng, Chang Yoong Chia and Teoh Ming Wah. 2. A contemporary art exhibition at Sekolah Menengah Stella Maris featuring works by 15 leading contemporary Malaysian artists, among them Wong Hoy Cheong and Ahmad Fuad Osman, which range from photography to film to art installations. The artworks will be exhibited in both the interior and exterior spaces of the school compound, including the canteen, assembly hall, basketball courts, toilets, locker rooms, gym, library and classrooms. 3. Guided Art Tours and Art Talks by artists such as Foo Wei Meng, Tan Nan See, Amanda Heng, Kok Siew Wai and Ahmad Fuad Osman will be held during the exhibition for visiting school groups. Another programme in the pipeline is the Art Critique Session (tbc) by artist Liew Kung Yu, which promises to give an insight into the concept of curating art. A project initiated by Rumah Air Panas (R.A.P.) artists collective, in partnership with Stella Maris Secondary School and Galeri Petronas, and supported by the Matahati Art Fund and The Annexe's Grants For Grabs. |
