Synopsis : The "Malacca Sketchbook" exhibition comprises over 150 watercolour paintings and pencil sketches by artist Chin Kon Yit for Edition Didier Millet’s latest edition in its sketchbook series.

The watercolours and pencil sketches showcase the city’s rich cultural heritage, reflected in the colourful fabric of its traditional houses, association buildings, shophouses, places of worship and historic monuments.

Former colonial buildings such as St Paul’s Church, the Stadthuys and the Independence Memorial are captivatingly illustrated by Kon Yit.

Largely self-taught, Chin Kon Yit is one of Malaysia’s most distinguished watercolour artists. He worked in advertising but in his spare time, he pursued his interest in fine art, specialising in still-life painting and architectural subjects.

In 1991, Kon Yit became a full-time artist and his work has been shown in nine solo exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur, both local and international joint exhibitions, and in several hotels.

The Malacca Sketchbook authored by Chen Voon Fee and illustrated by Chin Kon Yit will be available for sale at Badan Warisan Malaysia.  The book’s highlights include:

• Over 150 watercolour paintings and pencil sketches.
• Abundant illustrations with careful attention to architectural and cultural detail.
• Extensively researched text with historical and architectural insights on Malacca
• Numerous handwritten captions to accompany the artist’s intriguing sketches and paintings.

RECOMMENDED! Kon Yit's story is one that intertwines humble beginnings, an appreciation for our country's (often neglected) built heritage, the determination to practise as an artist and artistic success. Take some time off your lunch break or a weekend and meander around the streets of Malacca through his eyes.
